Plant Applications: Energy-efficient lighting to save medical component-maker $20,000 per year

MRPC located in Butler, WI

Situation

MRPC, located in Butler, Wis., is a custom manufacturer of molded silicone, medical rubber, and thermoplastic components and assemblies for the medical device industry. The company specializes in two-material applications, combining multiple materials into components and assemblies.

In 2010 the company worked with suppliers that specialize in green and lean initiatives to determine what the return on investment would be for replacing all the T12 fluorescent lighting in its plant.

Resolution

Over a period of about two weeks, MRPC replaced the lighting with more efficient T8 bulbs. The company received a grant from Wisconsin’s Focus on Energy program, which will allow it to recoup its $40,000 investment in just less than two years.

The quality of lighting has improved in the operational areas, giving employees another tool to help ensure that the company’s products maintain a consistent high quality.

MRPC also installed motion sensors in some parts of the plant to help reduce energy consumption. Combined, the new equipment is expected to lead to a savings of about $20,000 a year going forward.
