Plant Applications: Diving product manufacturer uses daylight to reduce electricity consumption

Solatube manufacturing plant

Situation

Aqua Lung is a manufacturer of recreational diving and snorkeling equipment with headquarters in Vista, Calif. The company wanted to reduce its utility costs and improve working conditions for employees by introducing daylight into the high-bay manufacturing and warehouse areas of the facility.

Resolution

Solatube Intl. Inc. worked with Southern California Roofing to retrofit the manufacturing, shipping, and warehouse areas of the 60,000-sq.-ft., high-bay facility with the SolaMaster® series 21-in. daylighting system. The units were installed without interrupting the work going on in the facility.

When photocontrols were installed and a dedicated phone line was set up with the local utility to monitor electric consumption throughout the building, Aqua Lung noticed an immediate sitewide electricity consumption reduction of 33 percent.
