Plant Applications: Tank farm foundation building process protects environment

Delta industrial

Situation

Gage Products Co. is a supplier of sustainable solvent manufacturing and remanufacturing systems located in Ferndale, Mich.

When the company decided to build a new chemical solvent tank farm in a densely populated metropolitan area, it needed an appropriate foundation.

Resolution

Gage Products chose Delta Industrial to design and build the foundation. Instead of using a rubber liner under the base of the tank farm, engineers chose to use an 8 percent micro-silica concrete mix. This is double the rate required by the Michigan Department of Transportation to build bridge decks.

The process strengthened the containment wall and slab to prevent deterioration in the event of a spill or leak from the 14 large storage tanks to be located on the farm. The process also enabled Delta to reduce construction costs and shorten the build time by several weeks.
