Plant Applications: Foam panels keep solar technology afloat

Foam panels for solar technology

Situation

Pyron Solar III LLC, based in San Diego, manufactures the Pyron Solar Triad, a patented solar concentrator photovoltaic (CPV) system that harnesses the sun’s energy with high energy conversion and unlimited scalability.

The system is designed to float on water to help ensure proper orientation of the photovoltaic cells to the sun’s rays. The water also acts as a passive heat sink to decrease cell temperature and increase solar cell efficiency.

The company required foam panels to keep the cells afloat and accurately aligned to maximize sun exposure.

Resolution

Fabrico manufactured the foam panels to very tight specifications, giving buoyancy to the system and allowing its tracking system to maintain an accurate fix on the sun.

As utilities and commercial enterprises seek more efficient methods of converting the sun’s energy into usable power, Fabrico is applying its design, manufacturing, and materials sourcing services to ready the system for large-scale commercial acceptance.
