Zero-discharge black oxide finishing

March 18, 2011

TRU TEMP black oxide process

The 30-min. TRU TEMP® low-temperature black oxide process is available in a new zero-discharge configuration that eliminates the need for a drain connection.

The system from Birchwood Casey uses ion exchange technology to purify and recycle the rinse waters, resulting in a closed-loop zero-discharge installation. The technology is available for all system sizes, including 40-gal., 100-gal., and larger-capacity custom tank systems.

The system removes all particulates and dissolved ions from the rinse waters, generating deionized water that can be reused over and over. The process operates at 200 degrees F, eliminating the hazards of a boiling tank, and is safe to install in any area of the plant.

With a 30-min. blackening time, the process forms a black magnetite finish of 0.000020 in. thickness equal to that of hot black oxide. Meeting Mil Spec DTL 13924D and AMS 2485, the process contains no EPA-regulated metals.
