Inline system extracts copper from shredded ferrous scrap

September 16, 2011

Steinert has introduced the XSS®-F, an inline system designed to extract copper (such as so-called “meatballs”) from shredded ferrous scrap. It can process high volumes of steel scrap directly out of the shredder, processing more than 100 tons per hour.

The unit uses high-speed X-Stream X-ray fluorescence (XRF) technology provided by Olympus Innov-X to separate scrap based on chemical composition. The average end product contains less than 0.20 percent copper.

The standard model comprised a conveyor-mounted spectrometer module, typically containing multiple tubes and detectors to detect and analyze each piece of scrap material. In a few milliseconds, user-defined sorting parameters determine whether or not to divert a piece out of the main stream. Diverted material is ejected using compressed-air valves.
