Closed-loop solvent handling system allows internal recycling

March 2, 2011

Closed-loop solvent handling system

Safechem North America LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of The Dow Chemical Co., offers a closed-loop process for handling chlorinated and nonchlorinated solvents.

The process uses sealed cleaning equipment technology combined with a system of safety containers connected through a hose with the closed-cleaning machine. The SAFECARE™ system of safety containers includes two different double-walled containers for the safe transport, storage, and use of solvents. One is designated for the supply of fresh solvent and the other for the collection of used solvent for recycling. The outer steel box protects the drum, preventing damage or spills.

The solvents are pumped automatically in and out of the cleaning machine in a closed loop. This practically leak-proof method limits vapor emissions and nearly eliminates spills or contact with the solvent.

The company provides active solvent maintenance including on-site testing methods, lab analysis, and stabilization packages, allowing customers to perform internal recycling within the cleaning machine to keep the solvent in the process longer.

The process meets the NESHAP air emission regulation, OSHA worker exposure regulation, and RCRA and CERCLA regulations for spillage during storage and handling.
