Thermogen Industries, Millinocket, Maine, a subsidiary of Cate Street Capital, has signed a letter of intent with the Eastport Port Authority, Eastport, Maine, to build a torrefied wood pellet manufacturing facility on land adjacent to the port's Estes Head Terminal. The company intends to start construction in early 2014.
The facility will produce 200,000 to 300,000 tons of torrefied wood pellets annually, creating about 75 new jobs in Eastport and more than 300 jobs in the woods. This clean fuel product will be shipped overseas as an alternative for coal-fired power plants that need to reduce harmful emissions.
The company already has begun site preparations for a separate production facility in Millinocket, with construction to begin in late spring 2013. Production of torrefied wood products at that location is expected to start by the end of 2013.
