General Cable has introduced the EmPowr® Link CL™ medium-voltage cable. The product features cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE) cable jacketing and is designed for cool operation, low line loss, and improved resistance to deformation. The cable has lead-free compounds and returnable reels and qualifies for a carbon credit value.
The cable offers a 25 percent reduction in copper in the concentric neutrals, which is the result of the jacket’s higher transient temperature of 350 degrees C compared to 200 degrees C for linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE). This provides a greater amount of fault current capability for a given cross-sectional area, says the company, adding that the reduced copper concentric neutrals increase the shield resistance for lower line loss.
According to the company, the cable can meet the needs of wind farm and solar collection systems while continuing to provide the equivalent physical properties, coefficient of friction, and installation characteristics of its LLDPE thermoplastic jacket constructions.
